The research on the material, the texture and the color is the basis of the contextualization of the building, overcoming the style of traditional rural buildings, such as masserie (farms). The stone, quarried to make way for the foundations, was repositioned at the base of the building and reused in landscaping. The colour of the red earth has become that of floors and plasters. The upholstery, the profiles of the fixtures and the shading structures are in Cor-Ten steel, a material that patinates over time. Constants of color and matter has becomed the key elements in innovation. The composition of internal and external environments recalls the complexity and the way of living in these ancient houses. The energy efficiency and the environmental sustainability have been the fundamental elements of this intervention, which is why the property is A4 in energy class and built according to the principles of the ITACA Apulia protocol. Much of the energy used by the building is produced by a photovoltaic system and a solar thermal system. A rainwater collection system feeds the irrigation system of the Mediterranean garden, that has itself low water consumption. Domestic wastewater is purified with a phytodepuration and sub-irrigation system. The sun and the prevailing winds define the orientation of the property and the layout of the internal and external spaces. The full-wall windows frame glimpses of the countryside and views of the sea that rush in and remain part of the daily life of the inhabitants.
