On the edge, between the ancient center of Patù and the surrounding countryside, we find the farm village Le Corti di Begio: a complex, dating back to 1700, that over time has developed through the aggregation of different buildings. The volumes overlook a large garden, which in the past was used for the cultivation of vegetables. The symbiotic relationship between old and new is a further key element of the design process. The respect for materials and their craftsmanship are the focus of the intervention, aimed at restoring the entire complex through traditional techniques and bio-architecture products such as hydraulic limes, cocciopesto and local stone. We wanted to keep these places self-sufficient: great attention has been paid to the integration between the water cycle and energy production. Rainwater is collected and stored in ancient cisterns dug into the rock, the solar energy captured by the panels produces hot water and electricity. The new steel windows combine the advantages of thermal break and double glazing with the elegant profile of a traditional window. The harmonic presence of a contemporary architectural gesture is tangible in the cor-ten gate, that incorporates the texture of the existing wall and gives it a highly evocative image.
