In the plain of the centuries-old olive groves of Ostuni and the Itria Valley, you can admire the numerous vegetable gardens of the valley with red soil, the remaining patches of oak woods and Mediterranean vegetation often surrounded by dry stone walls that delimit the properties, the numerous olive groves and vineyards, the trulli and the white farmhouses scattered throughout the countryside. The landscape of the plain of centuries-old olive trees of Ostuni is characterized by a visual-perceptual element structuring this landscape such as the olive grove, which manifests itself with a high density of centuries-old plants in irregular rows, testifying to the historicity of the plant and its uses. This dwelling, which incorporates some features of the typical architecture of the area, blends into the landscape without altering the pre-existing balances.
More about
The project area is located in the countryside of the Municipality of Ostuni in the province of Brindisi, in the Chiobbica district, in the heart of the Itria Valley. The building was located in the area where building was permitted, a flat and sunnier area, where the presence of trees was less dense. The house is composed of four large rooms entirely barrel-vaulted (according to the traditional construction techniques of the place) divided by internal partitions. The two rooms vaulted to the north-west are respectively a living room, equipped with a sofa area with a fireplace, and a kitchen/dining room communicating with each other through two large openings. The two rooms vaulted to the south-east are instead, the master bedroom with a walk-in closet and private bathroom and another guest room, also equipped with a toilet. The house has large views on the east side, from which you can enjoy the view of the valley and more contained views to the west and south. The entire covered surface extends only and exclusively on the ground floor, this allows not to alter the skyline of the pre-existing landscape. The entire building was built with traditional building technology, with a marked emphasis on the insulating and thermal mass capabilities of the envelope. The external plaster alternating with portions covered in local stone, guarantee the building a balanced “mimicry” with the surroundings thanks to the use of shades similar to the color of the earth and stone present in the ground itself. The choice of thick walls is combined with both the typical appearance of rural buildings and the need to create sufficient thermal mass to ensure excellent insulating performance of the envelope, as well as regulating the internal microclimate.
